About semi - automated pipe welding

Pipe welding contractors face ever demanding market conditions. There is a constant need to improve productivity, to remain competitive, to get the job done on time and within budget. With rigorous welding standards, regulatory changes, an aging workforce and increasing costs, considering a semi-automated welding option can make a difference.

  • Competitive edge. Firefly is quick. Greater weld speeds present an opportunity to gain a competitive edge in a tough industry.
  • Improve productivity. Firefly produces a consistent and repeatable weld result. Productivity can be improved by updating the skilled welder's toolbox with a semi-automated welding option.
  • Adaptable system. Firefly is an adaptable pipe welding system capable of orbital and linear welding in all gravity positions.
  • Leading technology. Firefly incorporates a fully digital platform for precise control of key welding parameters.

About the pipe sections

Firefly welders have prepared 12-inch NB and 20-inch NB pipe sections for the live demonstrations. The workpieces have a range of 60⁰ inclusive and J-Prep bevel profiles with simulated root passes of between 1.5mm and 2.5mm. Wall thicknesses vary between 9.5mm and 18mm. Different weld processes will be covered during the demonstration.

The pipe sections have been prepared using an MCA Lightweight Clamshell Cutting and Bevelling Machine supplied by IWS (Industrial Welding Supplies).

About Firefly

Firefly is primarily intended as an orbital welding system for pipeline welding applications in the oil, gas and water industries. As well as pipeline projects, Firefly has also been used for other projects such as wind turbine jacket manufacture and the manufacture of landing legs for jack-up vessels. Firefly can be used where there is a high degree of weld repeatability - linear and orbital and in all gravity positions.
